Did you know that chocolate is toxic to your pet ?
Chocolate, so good is it, should not be offered to your pet. It contains, Indeed, a substance called theobromine which presents a significant toxicity that can cause the death of your pet.
I. DOSES TOXIC
The theobromine is present in variable amount in the various kinds of chocolates:
It is about three times more present in dark chocolate milk chocolate and is almost absent in white chocolate (dark chocolate contains about 6,5mg theobromine/g against 2,1 mg/g in milk chocolate)
It is about three times more present in dark chocolate milk chocolate and is almost absent in white chocolate (dark chocolate contains about 6,5mg theobromine/g against 2,1 mg/g in milk chocolate)
Toxic doses are reported to be between 100 and 300mg of theobromine absorbed per kilogram (either a dose of 150 to 300 grams of dark chocolate for a dog of 10 Kg) but they appear to be highly variable from one individual to another.
II. SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED HAS CHOCOLATE POISONING
The symptoms of poisoning appear in the 2 to 4 hours following ingestion of chocolate:
– Of digestive signs are noted with vomiting, a possible salivation and diarrhea of dark. These digestive signs are accompanied by an abnormal agitation of the animal.
– After a few hours, Bass Cardiac disorders appear: the heart rate increases (tachycardia), hypertension and rhythm disorders may occur.
These anomalies can be added with nervous disorders: The animal seems hyperaggressive (He reacts very strongly to the slightest stimulation), It presents an abnormal gait (with an incoordination of movements) and can get up to convulse, and even falling into coma.
III. TREATMENT
The prognosis of chocolate poisoning is reserved because there are no antidote capable of eliminating the theobromine the body of the animal.
If you suspect this poisoning in your pet, You should go to your vet as soon as possible. It will implement a symptomatic treatment: – If ingestion of chocolate took place shortly before the emergency consulting, He would vomit the animal for limit the absorption of theobromine or may perform gastric lavage. – Activated charcoal will be administered every three hours, still, in order to reduce the amount of theobromine absorbed by the body. – The animal will be placed under infusion to combat the Ionic imbalances caused by chocolate. – Of anticonvulsants to fight against the convulsive crisis. – One Cardiac therapy will decrease the heart rate and regulate the rhythm disorders.
The speed of implementation of the treatment improves prognosis. Should therefore be do not wait for symptoms before contacting your veterinarian.
§
Ingestion of chocolate is bad for dogs. Its toxicity is variable in function of theindividual (every individual appears to be more or less sensitive), of theage and of theState of health of the animal (Puppies, older dogs, the insufficient kidney and liver are more sensitive) and type of chocolate ingested (dark chocolate is more toxic than the milk chocolate).
The toxicity chocolate can be acute (a dog who has stolen and absorbed chocolate wafers can present serious heart rhythm disorders and die in the 18 to 24 hours following the occurrence of these problems) but also cumulative (regular intake of small quantities of chocolate distributed by owners may be accompanied by the appearance of cardiac disorders). All administration of chocolate is therefore inappropriate in your animal.
To note that, if the dog is often spontaneously attracted by the chocolate cat, and therefore usually poisoned, Chocolate is toxic as well as for our one another.
