Piroplasmosis
Piroplasmosis is a parasitic disease transmitted by ticks (in France, two species of ticks : Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus).
It is responsible for often severe hemolytic anemia, complicated by kidney damage. We meet Piroplasmosis in dogs but also in horses, and to some extent in cattle.
What symptoms ?
The symptoms of babesiosis are extremely variable, which complicates the diagnosis. The disease often begins with a high fièvre, de l'anorexia (the dog does not eat), a strong reduction and pale mucous membranes related to the destruction of red blood cells and jaundice (jaundice).
Diagnosis is made by microscopic examination of the blood of the animal sick.
What prevention ?
The best prevention consists of regular administration of external parasiticides directed against ticks. Various products and formulations are marketed, effective and easy to use. Ask your veterinarian for advice.
There is also a vaccine, to further limit the risk of contamination.
